I've done a fair bit of blogging over the years ... for myself, for money, for other people. One thing I've learned is that every good blog needs a purpose. For example, a blog may boost search rankings by providing readers with free, high-quality content. It can be a tool to help you build your personal brand. Or maybe the blogger in question LOVES [insert any hobby at all] and needs an outlet for it.
Lest there be any confusion, I wanted to clarify the purpose of this blog - it's a place for me to practice. It's my yoga mat. It's an old stand up piano with a doily on top. It's a rugged soccer field out behind the elementary school.
There's no doubt in my mind that I'm a good writer. But that doesn't mean I can't be better. I'm here be curious. I'm not done learning yet, and I want to keep improving my work, my skills and my ability to tell a story.
The writing I do for work is challenging, interesting and sometimes a lot of fun. I love getting to know a brand's voice and then drafting content to match their message. I love digging in and writing about topics that were previously not of interest to me. I love working with small business owners who care deeply about their contribution to the world. This blog is about a different kind of writing. Here, you will find me pushing myself to write deeply personal essays on the challenges of being human. I will explore thoughts and ideas, picking them apart and putting them back together again. Some of it will be elegant, some of it will be stark.
If you choose to follow along, I'd love to have you. I want to write for real, live humans and a private blog can never inspire me the same way that you can.
I can't promise the words I write here will be perfect. There will be some typos, and some weak narrative arcs. It's a process. I have no idea where it will take me, and that's what I love about writing.
